On a holiday to America, what comes to mind when you think of walking? USA destinations often bring to mind the more urban experiences - the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge and lively cities with bustling streets - but others may imagine quaint small towns, with tree-lines streets, general stores and a town square, and winding country lanes, rustic bridges and red-painted barns. For the rest, it could be vast fields and rolling hills, endless expanses of long roads and jaw-dropping landscapes. Here's the good news, all of these are true- and that's the beauty of America.
You may find it a little overwhelming to decide on an itinerary, which is why a guided tour is a fantastic option; and, if you're new to either walking or America, here's a suggestion - start in the big cities.
New York
New York is definitely a popular choice. Not only is it a great city to explore by walking, USA visitors come in their droves for the sheer wealth of attractions - the wonderful expanse of Central Park's landscapes, the modern, cosmopolitan feel of Manhattan and the cultural richness of the Museum Mile and Broadway. The city is top of the 'must-see' destinations on many people's list of where to go, not only in the USA, but the world. But be warned- there's so much to see, you may end up spending all of your holiday time here! But that's simply a good excuse to come back.
San Francisco
Definitely one of the most picturesque cities in the USA, San Francisco is the financial and cultural centre of the West Coast. It is also a city just crying out to be explored on foot; with steep and winding streets, graceful architecture overlooking the bay, and an artsy population. No other city in the USA has the creative and quirky buzz that San Francisco has, and you will find it hard to leave. Its many attractions include Fisherman's Wharf, the Coit Tower and Alcatraz.
Chicago
If you're looking for a place that's busy, yet not as hectic as New York, and where the pace is a little flatter than in San Francisco, Chicago is the place to go walking! USA's Windy City is the birthplace of blues and jazz, and there are numerous blues clubs where you can listen to great music, enjoy wonderful food and relax. You might not even need to go into a bar for the blues- it's not uncommon to pass a great saxophone player or two while strolling down the Magnificent Mile.
With 50 states, all with their own different attractions, amazingly diverse topography, and grandiose landscapes, there is no dearth of places to visit in the USA. These three cities are just the tip of the iceberg of options when it comes to a holiday involving walking in the USA.
