Walking USA - As NOT Seen on TV

If you are attracted to the idea of a holiday that involves walking, USA destinations will provide you with the opportunity to see things that are completely unique and which may change your view of the USA considerably.

The USA - stereotypical images

Hollywood is a major aid in helping attract visitors to the USA - but it does have its drawbacks. A considerable amount of its output may leave one with the impression that the USA is primarily about big, inner-city problem areas, police chases or maybe, in some cases, the old wild West!

In fact, this is a continental sized country with a vast diversity of peoples, cultures and attractions to see. Many of them have little or nothing in common with the images portrayed in typical Hollywood productions. If you take a guided tour that involves walking, USA destinations of this type can be explored up close and personal, and may actually serve to change your entire view of the United States.

Walking, USA sights and choice

It is virtually impossible in a short article talking about the USA as a holiday destination to decide where to begin. Let's just consider a brief taster of some of the things that you may see on a guided walking tour that may be significantly different to the average TV or movie viewing experience of the USA:

• The Grand Canyon. People constantly try, and fail, to describe the grandeur of this area. It is possible to drive around parts of it and to fly around the rim, but to really experience it, you have to walk it.

• Death Valley. One of the hottest and driest places on Earth, the colours and vistas of this area are simply breathtaking.

• Virginia city and the silver mines. This town is a beautifully preserved old 'Wild West' town but, perhaps more importantly for walkers, it sits in the middle of mountains that became famous for silver mining during the 19th century. Today you can see examples of wildlife, unique flora and even quite a few genuine ghost towns and old mines.

• New York City. This city needs no introduction nor do its attractions, however, it is an area perhaps best explored through a mixture of walking and public transport, and you'll see more if you have an expert tour leader.

• San Francisco. Often called "everybody's favourite city", you will be able to see why if you explore it on foot - including locations such as Fisherman's wharf and Chinatown.

• The National Parks. Destinations such as Yosemite and Yellowstone are world-famous and you may get the chance to see flora and fauna that you simply will not see anywhere else on the planet. Many internal areas of these parks are only partly accessible by road so the best mode of transport is your own two feet.

This is only a tiny flavour of how your holidays in the USA can be enhanced by walking. USA destinations typically cater superbly well for walkers and parties of all age groups and fitness levels.
